How to adjust webcam brightness, exposure and focus on Windows
If your webcam looks dark, grainy, out of focus, or an ugly shade of orange on video calls, it's almost never the camera's fault — it's the settings. The problem is that Windows gives you almost no way to change them. The Camera app has a couple of sliders at best, and everything else your camera can actually do is buried in the driver. This guide shows you what each setting does, how to fix the common problems, and how to lock your look in so it survives every restart.
Why Windows hides webcam settings
Almost every USB webcam supports a long list of adjustable settings — brightness, contrast, exposure, white balance, gain, focus, zoom, pan, tilt and more. Windows just doesn't give you a single place to change them. Some camera makers ship their own software, but the generic 1080p and 4K cameras that most people buy usually don't, so those settings are effectively locked away. To reach them you need a tool that talks directly to the camera driver.

These three get confused constantly, and using the wrong one is why so many webcams look bad. Here's the difference:
- Exposure controls how long the sensor collects light. This is your main brightness control. Turn off Auto exposure first, then raise exposure until the image is bright enough.
- Gain amplifies the signal after the fact. It brightens a dark image but also adds grain/noise, so use it sparingly and only after exposure.
- Brightness is a simple lift of the whole image. Use it for small final tweaks, not as your main tool — pushing it too far makes everything look flat and washed out.
Fixing the colour (white balance)
If your skin looks orange, blue or sickly, that's white balance. Automatic white balance drifts as your lighting changes, which is why you sometimes shift colour mid-call. Turn off auto white balance and set the value manually until a white wall or piece of paper looks truly neutral. Once it's set, it stays put.
Sharpening the image (focus)
Autofocus is handy until it starts "hunting" — going soft every time you move or hold something up. If your camera supports manual focus, turn autofocus off and set focus by hand for the distance you actually sit at. It'll stay razor-sharp for the whole call. (Fixed-focus cameras won't show this control — that's normal.)
Getting rid of flicker and banding
Rolling dark bands or a subtle flicker under office or LED lighting is a mismatch between your camera and your mains frequency. Set powerline frequency (sometimes called anti-flicker) to 60 Hz in North America or 50 Hz in most of Europe, Asia and Australia. The banding disappears instantly.
Making your settings survive a reboot
Here's the frustrating part: many webcams forget everything the moment they're unplugged or Windows restarts. The fix is to save your settings as a profile and have Windows re-apply it automatically at sign-in.
- Get the camera looking right, then save a profile — call it
Studio. - Press
Win + R, typeshell:startupand press Enter. - Create a shortcut in that folder pointing to
AllSparkWebcamControl.exe --apply "Studio".
Now your exposure, white balance and focus are restored every time you log in — no more re-fiddling before every meeting. Add --device "Camera name" if you use more than one camera.
